I’m sure you’ve all seen the commercials, and I have tried really hard to not voice my opinions on the matter, but Jane Seymour is a hack. And her “open hearts” series is just a way for her to make more money. (Which is a shame because I think she is a fine actress). Google her to see her stuff I’m not linking.
The reason why I think she is a hack is very simple. Her open heart design is just a child’s doodle that most girls learn how to do by the fifth grade (at the latest). Girls do it to circle pictures, to add flourishes to letters, because they are girls and like hearts (I don’t know why they do it, I know I learned how just to see if I could). I did an example on a post-it (below) as an example:

But, you know, props to Jane for figuring out that people would love this design and spend money on it, I think she has a very good business head. That doesn’t mean that I don’t think she is a hack. And just because I think she is a hack, doesn’t mean that I don’t respect her as an actress or as a business person. I think she is very intelligent. And, honestly, I don’t even really have a problem with her using this design. I have a problem with the commercial where she is pictured painting this design on a canvas and acting like it is a great masterpiece that took her the whole of her life to come up with. The whole commercial actually pisses me off. This is not a masterpiece, it is a child’s doodle that looks really good as a piece of jewelry (and it does look really nice), and it bothers me that it is portrayed as something she worked and slaved at. I do believe that it means a great deal to her, and that she is really fond of it. I have little simplistic doodles that mean the world to me. But I do not act as if it took me years and years to come up with.
And maybe I am reading too much into the commercial and my art snob is showing (because I will admit that I am an art snob. I try not to be, but there it is).
So, bottom line, I think the design is good and looks great as a piece of jewelry, but I do not want one. I think Jane Seymour has wonderful business sense, and I respect that and the fact that she got something she created picked up by a major jewelry store. I still think she is a hack, though…
