There is very little in this chaotic world that a person can control. The weather, other people, even ones own fate; it is all decided for you by some higher power. Except for art. Any form of art, from music, to painting, to sculpting, is arbitrary. It is controlled by the Artist, and it is molded to the Artist’s whims and desires. That is why I paint. In painting, the world falls away, leaving only the paper, the paint, and myself. Watercolor is a wild thing, much like the world around me, so, by controlling the watercolor, in some ways I control my world.
I try not to beat my audience over the head with the meanings I place into my works. If you have an emotional response to them, I succeeded. If not, I failed. It is my job, as the Artist, to illicit some feeling from you, the audience. If I have to explain every aspect and meaning of the piece, I did not do my job right. You should be able to look at my works and come to your own conclusions. Look at them, feel what you wish. By experiencing the works, you, too, have some control over this world when, at times, it feels like it spins along without you.
